Now, add filling material, say tansy, statice or hortensia, reaching half the height of the twigs and ferns. For greater appeal, place the most attractive flowers with the main colors of the arrangement in the center of the arrangement.

Take care to see that the arrangement is in a fine balance--neither too heavy on one side nor too weak on the other. While maintaining the basic shape of the arrangement, keep putting in flowers and heighten its effect with grasses and seed heads.

With all the special occasions spring brings, think flowers, dried that is. Many choices wait. So begin with the selection of the Tilandsia in green, as center of interest along with preserved Lasiantha leaves in dark green placed in a large crystal goblet to which assorted moss stones have been added in the bottom. Keeping in the cool shades of green, add basil Stone beans & preserved frosted Eucalyptus in olive, to bring height to the arrangement. For a finished touch add a basil colored raffia bow. This makes for a cool & refreshing touch, adding beauty & charm.

Coming up soon will be Fathers Day, and Dads do like flowers, too, if we don't make it to frou-frou looking. I'm thinking for my Dad, something simple, using a grouping of natural wheat (as he is a retired farmer) combined with pencil slim natural Cattails mixed with the flax grass assortment of brown/Bordeaux/natural. For special interest I'll add a few natural wild turkey skirt feathers. (He'll love this, as he feeds wild turkeys at his ranch everyday during the winter). I'll place these in a beer stein with a note: "Check the fridge"

Included on the table will are the guest book, & a basket filled with complimentary favors/mini net bags filled with lavender buds. Now all we need is perfect weather, the Bride & Groom & "I DO's".

How to Protect Hydrangeas From Winter Frost

One common reason why hydrangeas fail to bloom during summer is winter frost. Hydrangea buds are sensitive to cold. When the temperature falls below 25 degrees fahrenheit during winter, you can lose the hydrangea buds. Protecting your hydrangreas against the winter cold is extremely important.

Trimming the Hydrangea Bush

Keeping your hydrangeas safe through the winter starts before August. Towards the end of summer, trim your hydrangea bushes to remove dead and weak branches. Cut close to the base of the stem you want to trim off. Be careful not to snip off the healthy branches because this is where the flowering buds are located.

Insulate your In-Ground Hydrangeas

To keep your hydrangea from freezing in the cold, create insulation all around your hydrangea bush. One way to do this is by using chicken wire and dried leaves.

What you do is you stake sticks around the perimeter of your hydrangea bush. The sticks should be about 10 inches taller than the bush once planted into the ground. Next, put chicken wire around and on top across the sticks, completely surrounding the hydrangea bush. Finally, carefully fill the cage with pine needles and leaves to insulate your plant.

Many home gardeners recommend using oak leaves because they tend to stay in place better than other types of leaves. Do keep bags of dried leaves in your store room throughout winter to replace the leaves that settle in your insulation.

When insulating your plant, be careful not to damage the ends of the branches. These are where the flowering buds are located. You do not want to inadvertently damage or snap off these buds.

Protection for Potted Hydrangeas

The best way to protect your potted hydrangeas from the winter frost is to bring them indoors before autumn ends. Sometimes, because potted hydrangeas may be too large to easily move, you have to keep them outside during winter. In this case, should still insulate them.

To insulate potted hydrangeas, what you do is you first fill in the plant in between its branches with dried leaves. Next, compress the plant by tying the branches together with a rope. Make sure the branches are snug but not too tight. Next, get some foam insulation to wrap around both the plant and the pot. Make sure the sides and the top are covered.

By protecting your hydrangea plant well during winter, you'll be able to enjoy lovely blooms in the next summer.

CAMOMILE (Chamaemelum nobile) -- A hardy evergreen perennial propagated from cuttings or by division. The double-flowered variety "Flore-pleno", when dried, is used in decorations. I started from absolute scratch and even though I have never reached an exceptional high standard I get a lot of satisfaction from flower arranging.

It lead to being asked to help out at church festivals, parties weddings etc. or just doing an arrangement for a friend as a gift.

I find just handling flowers has quite a calming effect and instead of just buying yourself some flowers and putting them in a vase, take time and make yourself an arrangement. You'd be surprised what a stunning display can be done without spending a fortune - just a bunch of spray carnations and some nice foliage can do the trick.

Fresh or dried flowers can be used depending on the occasion and all year round there is no shortage of either.

I now get asked to help at weddings or church festivals which can at first appeared quite daunting, but don't be put off. Even though a pedestal may be out of your range there are window sills and pew ends to be done.

When I have been asked to help on these occasions I have always found people very helpful, offering advice and sharing materials.

Keep your eyes open for good foliage.

If you have suitable greenery in your garden it will make it easier but search your friends gardens (with their permission of course) and you will be amazed at what you can use.

1. Philippine Wax Flower. Belongs to the family Zingerberaceae with its binomial name as Etlingera elatior. This herbaceous perennial plant is also known as Torch Ginger, Ginger Flower, Red Ginger Lily, Torch Lily, Wild Ginger, Combrang, Bunga Siantan, Xiang Bao Jiaing, Indonesian Tall Ginger, Boca de Dragon, Rose de Porcelaine or Porcelain Rose, and Philippine Wax Flower.

Its flowers are used in decorative flower arrangements. Some parts of its flower, like the flower buds are used as a ingredient in the Nonya dish and laksa. It's also used for a dish called arsik ikan mas or Andaliman/Szechuan pepper spiced carp in North Sumatra.

Laksa is a popular spicy noodle soup from the Peranakan culture, a combination of Chinese and Malay which is prevalent in Malaysia, Singapore and extended up to Indonesia.

2. Night-blooming Cereus (Cereus greggii) is a gray cactus that sprawl across the sand. It sprouts a few ribbed, twiggy stems with fragile spines all through its entire plant and looks dead when you see it. It blooms a white flower and perfumes the dry air during the night, hence the name Queen of the Night. This unique plant is found in the Sonora and Chihuahua deserts of Arizona, Texas, and northern part of Mexico.

As the sun goes down, this plant opens its flower with a size of 8 inches long and 4 inches wide. Its fragrance spreads as far as 30 meters radius. Some nocturnal insect pollinators, like hawk moths and others feed on the nectar and at the same pollinates the flower. After being pollinated, the flower close up and don't open anymore.

Pollinated flower developed an oblong, spiny, red-orange fruit and once in the ground grows and develop from a tuberous taproot which is edible for consumption.

3. American Pitcher Plant. This unique plant is a native of North America. It has a five-petal led flowers that emerges from the ground with a shades of yellow from pale pink to red and nod downward from a 1-3 feet stalk. The flowers are scented that lasts 1-2 weeks to attract bees to pollinate the flowers.

The appealing colors of its flowers lures insects to its sweet nectar that contains a narcotic, coniine that causes paralysis of the insects and later end their lives.

The insects later becomes liquefied and the plant reabsorb the soup portion where the plant gets its nutrients needed like nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and other elements derived from the insects trapped.

4. Rainbow Plant. This plant is related to butterworts, but they trap insects like the sundews. Insects are attracted to the radiation in all directions of the wispy stems with the fringy leaves. The insects flock to the dew (which are actually sticky glue) that covers the whole plant that makes it simmer with rainbow colors.

While the plant is showing its radiance to attract insects, it exudes a mysterious enzyme and bacteria-free digestive juice that breaks down the insects soft tissue and eventually soften to easily being absorbed into the plant's body tissues.

5. Sea Holly. It is also known as Rattlesnake-Master, Sea Holm, Spiny Cilantro, and Miss Wilmott's Ghost, it is a hardy perennial that blooms in the latter half of summer. It grows from 18-36 inches tall with a one-foot spread.

A native of Iran and the Caucasus, it's related to Queen Anne's Lace, parsley, fennel, and anise. It's flowers has no fragrance, but are ideal for dried flower arrangements.

Sea holly tolerates in full sunlight with good drainage moist soil. It grows from a deep taproot and it's easily grown from seeds. Germination usually takes up to 10 weeks, a long wait. So, you've to advance your planting to catch the time for the right climate to grow this plant.

Make a Stunning Dried Hydrangea Wreath

Dried hydrangea wreaths are so beautiful and versatile in a home, and a lot of fun to make as well.

You can either purchase already dried hydrangea flowers from your local craft store, or you can dry your own. The biggest trick when drying your own is the timing of when you pick the flowers. It is best to pick them right before you anticipate your first fall frost. If you pick them mid-summer, they just will not dry correctly.

You can either hang them upside down in a darkened room to dry, or you can set them in a vase upright, even adding a tiny bit of water in the bottom of the vase, although even that is optional. As long as they are picked at the correct time, it's difficult to fail with them. It's fun if you can, to pick several blooms from different bushes, as it will provide a nice variety of colors to the wreath. After they are dried, pick off any dead / discolored brown blooms.

Now, pick the type of base you want to use for a wreath. My personal favorites are either Styrofoam or grapevine type wreath bases. Take some floral wire and wrap it around the wreath, then form a loop of the wire to hang from the wall, and then wrap the wreath again. You might try hanging it from the wall at this point to make sure it lies correctly, and then make any needed adjustments while the wreath is bare.

To do a Styrofoam wreath, use a low melt point hot glue gun. Separate each bloom into smaller florets. Hot glue each floret into the wreath base, actually poking the stem down into the Styrofoam base. With each bloom, space it out over the surface of the wreath, for example; a floret at the top, next left side, bottom, then right side, then inside the circle of the wreath, and outside of the wreath. Continue to do this with each bloom until you fill it.

Balance is what you are looking for. Balance in shape, you don't want any sticking out way above the others, you don't want one side of the wreath to be fuller than the other. Try stepping back and looking at a distance and just think "balance of shape".

The second area to look for is balance of color. This is the purpose of doing each bloom all over, then filling in, so you achieve that balance of color. Give another once over to check on that.

Now, this wreath is either finished, or you can add perhaps add small sprigs of dried baby's breath to it. Really depends on the look you want. Sometimes the simplicity of only the hydrangeas is stunning.

For a grapevine wreath, it's the same principal but a different look. You can tie a bow on the wreath if you want (if you do, do so before adding flowers), or ribbon. I like to leave bare spaces on these to be able to see the grapevine portion as well. Again, look for balance. You can also add dried roses to it or any other type of dried flowers or grasses too. You can get really creative with these and come up with very different looks. Experiment to your heart's content.

Many times people expect dried floral arrangements to last forever, and are disappointed when they start looking bad after a few years. This is a misconception. Expect them to look good for about a year, that's really about all they were meant to last.

If they are in direct sunlight it will be a much shorter time. However, the next year, feel free to
strip the old flowers off, and make another with the same base for another year's worth of a gorgeous hand made wreath!

Sweet Woodruff (Galium Odoratum)

The word "Woodruff" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon wudurofe, from wudu, or woods, referring to the herb's natural habitat deep in the dark forests of Europe. In Germany's Black Forest, where sweet woodruff grows prolifically, the herb is known as "Waldmeister", or "Master of the Forest". The designation "sweet" refers to the vanilla-like, new mown hay fragrance the leaves and flowers impart when dried. This is due to the presence of Coumarin, which like patchouli has the ability to be a fixative to other fragrances in addition to its own aromatic contribution to perfumes and potpourris. "Ruff" derives from the French rovelle, meaning wheel, describing the arrangement of the leaves around the stem. In Old French, it was known as muge-de-boys or "musk of the woods."

In the garden, sweet woodruff makes an attractive perennial ground cover especially for shaded areas. Indeed, sweet woodruff's leaves will yellow and its pretty white-flowering will lessen if exposed to too much sun. Although it will grow with abandon through self-seeding and underground rhizomes once established, the seed can be difficult to germinate so it's best to buy your initial plants from a commercial grower or garden center. If starting from seed, make sure they're fresh and they must be stratified to germinate. The plant grows to six inches in both height and width. It is a perennial to zone 3 and flowers from May to June developing a bristly seed that is dispersed by attaching itself to the fur of passing animals.

Mix the wine, the chopped sweet woodruff, the brandy and the fruit in a large bowl and allow it to sit for at least 12 hours. Strain and remove the woodruff. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Pour in the chilled champagne and stir. Serve with the fresh woodruff as a garnish.

For those who would like a lower alcohol content, omit the brandy and substitute ginger ale for the champagne.

Sweet woodruff, especially in combination with other herbs, can alleviate even the most severe headache, including migraine. Try the following tea next time your head is pounding. The herbs may be fresh or dried; the ration remains the same.

Whenever I go anywhere I am prepared to gather dried materials with which to design. I carry brown bags, plastic bags, spray paints, rubber bands, wire, and plastic cellophane sleeves. I carry all these supplies in a box in the trunk of my car. It really takes up very little space. It is a lot of fun and the more you get out and walk around your surroundings, the more flora you will find. You will want to make sure that nothing you cut is protected. Be sure to cut dried material in moderation, so that it can reseed and come back next year. Carrying a flower and tree field guide with you will be very helpful in identifying plants; you can find the guides specific for your area. Your local library probably has this type of reference material. Gathering floral materials to use is fun, economical, and can be a good addiction.

Rice Grass

I live in the southwest. This is the area with which I am most familiar. In the spring, rice grass comes to life. It can be picked while green and also after it has field dried. It will then be a beautiful natural tan color if picked late in the summer. You will want to harvest rice grass before it gets wind blown which is what happens as the summer progresses. Pick bunches not to big. I trim the bunches of rice grass so they are nice and even so when I get home, they are ready to hang. If I want colored rice grass, I paint the bunch right there in the field. Rice grass in great for wreaths and to use as a filler flower in flower arrangements.

Peppergrass

I love peppergrass. It can be used as fresh cut material while in bloom. Use it right away in fresh floral arrangements or hang to dry. It is white when in bloom. Peppergrass works the same in flower arrangements as baby's breath. It is a bit lacier. If it is picked when naturally dried in the field it is a nice tan color. Whether you harvest it dried or fresh, make bunches not too large and secure the ends with a rubber band. When picked dried, you can spray paint your bunch any color you desire, then bring them to your shop and hang. Do not wait too late into the season to pick, as it will become too brittle.

Curly Dock

Curly dock is found throughout most of the United States along creek banks and in abandoned fields. Early in the season it can be picked while green and hung to dry. Later in the season, it turns naturally an awesome chocolate to russet color. It can grow up to 2-3 feet. I would cut as the dock long as possible. You can always cut shorter, but it is harder to lengthen materials. If cut earlier in the season, May -July, there is less chance of shattering. When picked in the fall, you may need to spray with a sealant to prevent shattering. Curly dock is a very versatile floral material. Use in autumn arrangements, wreaths, or dried and fresh arrangements.

Mullein

Mullein grows on dry hillsides and on roadsides. The leaves are grayish green and they feel like velvet. Mullein flowers are yellow and the stalk grows to a height of 3-6 feet. The mullein plant reminds me of liatris in nature, only taller, thicker, and dries to a soft grey to brown color. The stems can be cut and hung to dry. I would paint them after they are completely dry. If you need a very tall line flower for a dried arrangement, mullein is perfect.

Sage

Of course in the southwest, sage is plentiful. I would gather sage while newly bloomed early in summer. Gather in small, shorter bunches. It can be hung upside down to dry and used year round. Sage is great for wreaths and hand wrapped tussie-mussies. It is very pungently fragrant. Add other herbs for a wonderfully natural bouquet.

The popular trend today turns to the practical and long term effect of dried flowers and natural products used in arrangements for home and office. What better way to save money over the long term, the versatile use of such arrangements as this one using the amaranthus in green, draped over the edge of a large crystal goblet (which has a preserved sheet moss ball, in the bottom of such). You want the amaranthus falling at different lengths & depths. Keeping with the softness of this arrangement, add a few basil rattail millet stems, poked down in the goblet, along with basil golden button flowers. Top this off with the beautiful green Tilandsia. Let your eyes drink in this refreshing taste of beauty.

Grapevines being an easy, natural substance to work with, are perfect base for doing arrangements. Bend it into the form of heart or bow. At random glue small bunches of pineapple buttons in natural and the safflower in orange. Combining these two flowers at random and grouping them around and into the vine. Now that I'm on this purple kick, allow me to continue with the combination of the purple stars, ti tree in violet, giving it some height, along with the purple flax grass, lavender and plum ting ting flower.
